We gathered a few useful tips for the ebike battery care and usage, so you can enjoy your ebike for as long as possible.

Getting Started: Your Battery’s First Steps

When you first receive your new e-bike bought with us, the battery is already fully charged, and you may start using your e-bike immediately. Almost all of our ebikes are equipped with Bosch batteries, which have their full capacity right after the first full charge don by us, without needing several full charges to develop.
However, for some battery types, the rechargeable cells may require between 3 to 4 charging and discharging sequences (riding) before they deliver their maximum capacity. During this initial “formation” period, it’s normal if the battery appears to discharge relatively quickly. For these first 3-4 usages, try to discharge the battery as much as possible, but not so much that the bike completely stops working.

Smart Charging for a Longer Life

The service life of lithium-ion batteries is significantly influenced by factors such as charging cycles. To ensure optimal performance and longevity, always charge your battery with the original charger provided for your e-bike. It’s crucial to charge your battery in a dry area, ideally fitted with a working smoke detector. If possible, charge the battery at room temperature, as Bosch batteries, for example, only allow charging within a temperature range of 0°C and 40°C due to their intelligent temperature monitor.
During the charging process, always monitor it closely. Once the battery is fully charged, disconnect the battery and charger from the power supply. This is important to avoid over-charging, which can cause serious damage and poses a fire hazard. You should also try to avoid regularly draining the battery down to zero. It’s not necessary to charge your battery after every short ride; instead, after discharging, charge the battery and store it in a charged condition. Interrupting the charging process will not harm the battery.

Storing Your Battery: Keep It Happy When Not in Use

Proper storage significantly impacts your battery’s life. For long-term storage, especially for Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, or similar batteries, it’s recommended to charge them to 40-60% capacity before putting them away at room temperature. Bosch specifically advises storing its batteries at a charge status of 30-60% for longer periods. At this optimal charge level, they can be left for up to 6 months without issues.
Always store your battery at room temperature in a dry, frost-free room. If possible, remove the battery from the bike for storage. Remember that batteries gradually lose capacity due to self-discharging when not in use for an extended period. Therefore, charge the battery once every 8-10 weeks to maintain a full charge. For safety, do not store the battery near combustible or flammable materials, and ensure it’s in a room with a smoke detector installed.
When using your e-bike in winter, particularly below 0°C, it’s recommended to charge and store the battery at room temperature before inserting it into the e-bike immediately prior to riding. Be aware that at lower (outside) temperatures, the battery capacity will be considerably lower than usual. Lastly, using the battery regularly will actually benefit its lifetime.

Keeping Cool: Managing Battery Temperature

It’s normal for the battery to become somewhat hot during charging and discharging (riding). However, you must avoid excessive heating and direct sunlight. Always make sure to park your e-bike in the shade or a cool room, as high temperatures can damage the e-bike battery. The intelligent Bosch battery management system is designed to protect the battery from excessive operating temperatures, ensuring safe operation.

Clean & Tidy: ebike Battery Care Tips

When it comes to cleaning and care, a damp cloth is recommended for cleaning the battery. You should occasionally clean the plug poles. It’s crucial to always remove the battery before cleaning the e-bike. To protect the electronic components, never clean batteries with a direct jet of water or a high-pressure hose. Keep the battery mount and plug area clean; this ensures that water can drain off and the contacts can dry effectively. The contacts are supplied with a protective coating against corrosion and wear.

Safety First: Repairs

For safety reasons, you should never attempt to repair or “refresh” faulty, old, or worn-out batteries. Instead, they must be recycled appropriately. The battery housing must not be opened by untrained personnel. Opening the battery always interferes with its certified condition and entails significant safety risks, including potential short circuits and fire hazards. Improper repairs can lead to a loss of tightness, increased friction on wires, weakening of insulation, displacement of battery cells, and compromised electrical or mechanical connections, impacting correct function and interaction with the Battery Management System. Such actions can also affect guarantee and warranty claims and compliance with legal requirements. This is a task reserved exclusively for qualified and trained personnel.
It’s important to note that if a battery is heavily damaged, you should not touch it with bare hands, as electrolyte may leak out and cause skin irritation.

How Long Will Your Battery Last?

The service life of your e-bike battery is mainly influenced by the type and duration of use. With appropriate use and treatment, a Bosch e-bike battery can cover distances of up to 60,000 km during its lifetime.
Follow these simple yet effective tips, and you’ll keep your e-bike battery performing at its best, ensuring many, many more miles of happy riding! Enjoy the journey!
